黍 (millet character)

20686/20992

黍 names proso millet, a grain used in food and farming. In classical Chinese, the longer phrase 黍离 turns a grain scene into a lament for a fallen state; by itself, 黍 usually names the crop.

What 黍 means

黍 names proso millet, a grain also called broomcorn millet.

The crop is much older than its written character. Archaeobotanical research places the domestication process for common millet in northern China between 7000 and 3300 BCE, after a longer phase of harvesting and small-scale management.

Shang oracle-bone inscriptions already use 黍 in agricultural divination: one asks whether planting it will bring a harvest. Other readings use 黍 as a verb meaning “to plant millet”; the crop also supplied grain for ancestor rites. Later bronze and seal-script forms show the character’s written shape changing over time.

Why does 黍离 signal grief for a fallen state?

黍离 became a literary sign of grief for political ruin.

The Book of Songs, an early Chinese poetry anthology, includes 黍离 in its Wang Feng (“Royal Domain”) section. The poem places 黍 beside 稷 before a speaker grieves; Chinese dictionaries also use 黍离 for sorrow over a fallen state or a desolate former center. The grain meaning remains, but the phrase carries the poem’s memory.

Is 黍 the same grain as 稷?

No: 黍 and 稷 are paired grain names, not automatic synonyms.

Some older Chinese definitions overlap their crop labels, but agricultural references distinguish the grains. In 黍稷, the names form a classical pairing; 稷 also appears with 社 in 社稷, a term for the state. Keep 黍 as “millet” unless the surrounding phrase gives a narrower sense.

Literary and agricultural: 黍 names the crop, while 黍离 carries a deliberate classical allusion.

Alone, 黍 names a grain; do not infer political grief without 黍离 or similar context.

Why does 黍 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
