What 齧 means
Its core image is teeth biting into something.
The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi glosses it “噬也” (“to bite”) and analyzes 齧 as 齒 (“teeth”) plus 㓞, a sound component. Written forms appear on Qin-period bamboo slips and in later clerical and regular scripts. Older Chinese also used it for erosion and the gap left by gnawing.
In Japanese, 齧る (かじる) also describes having only a little knowledge or experience of something: you have nibbled at it, not mastered it.
