What 鿌 means
It carries the Chinese word for “cool” or “cold.”
In Mandarin, that word can also mean “disheartened.” The Tang-period 古清涼傳, a Buddhist record, uses 鿌 in the mountain name 清鿌寶山.
In this Buddhist tradition, Mount Qingliang is linked with Manjushri, a revered figure associated with wisdom; the religious meaning belongs to the place, not to 鿌 as a new mystical word.
Is 鿌 the same as 涼 or 凉?
No: Unicode keeps 鿌 separate from 涼 and 凉.
In 2010 Unicode accepted it for future encoding as a glyph from Adobe-Japan1-6, a Japanese font collection, because it had no plain-text character yet. The resulting character remains separate from 涼; Unicode’s character data also links it with 凉.
Use 鿌 in a historical transcription or when preserving a particular Japanese typographic form; in ordinary Chinese writing, use the spelling expected in that text.
Rare and typographic; it preserves a specific written form.

Questions people ask
1Why does 鿌 show as a box?
It can: the font may lack the glyph. A Japanese e-reader compatibility list reviewed on 2026-09-12 marks U9FCC unsupported on several listed devices. Use a font that includes it; substitute 涼 or 凉 only if the exact form is unnecessary.
