What 鿏 means
It labels element 109 in Chinese.
The character combines 钅, the metal marker, with 麦, a sound-bearing part; 麦 does not mean “wheat” here.
Chinese element names adopted a pattern of a metal marker plus a sound clue in the 19th century. China’s national terminology committee published 鿏 for element 109 in 1998, after IUPAC, the international chemistry body, approved meitnerium in 1997 to honor physicist Lise Meitner. If a font shows a blank box, it lacks 鿏; the element name has not changed.

Questions people ask
1Why does 鿏 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Unified Ideographs block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
