Orthodox Christ abbreviation

20951/20992

In Chinese Orthodox texts that transcribe Church Slavonic, 鿖 stands for Christ. It belongs in reading or explaining historical liturgical material; in ordinary Chinese, 基督 or the full name is clearer. The broader character set grew from a Russian Orthodox mission's effort to represent Slavonic sounds in Chinese.

Text symbol

What 鿖 means

It is a compact written form for Christ in this transcription tradition.

合利斯托斯 is a Chinese sound-based rendering of the Church Slavonic name Христос (Christ). 鿖 shortens that rendered name in liturgical writing; it is not a general-purpose Chinese word.

Why was 鿖 made?

It helped Chinese text carry Church Slavonic worship language.

Russian Orthodox translators needed Chinese writing that could represent Church Slavonic sounds. Many characters in this broader set were devised during Archimandrite Gurias's mission leadership, 1858–1864. In 1860, Isaiya proposed reshaping 合 as a short form of 合利斯托斯 in an Orthodox catechism; that earlier design is not the exact glyph 鿖.

The earliest documented exact use of 鿖 is in a 1910 Mandarin Psalter, a book of biblical psalms used in worship. A 1930/40 manuscript is another witness. Digital encoding is a later preservation layer, not the character's origin.

Should I use 鿖 in ordinary Chinese?

Save it for historical source work or a clearly explained quotation.

In a quoted Orthodox passage, it identifies the mission's Slavonic-to-Chinese transcription practice. Outside that setting, use 基督, the standard Chinese term for Christ, or spell out the intended name.

Specialist and religious; clear in historical source work, opaque without its context.

Don't send it as a generic religious symbol; explain the historical passage.
