What ⃔ means
It marks the character immediately before it.
In a sequence, ⃔ follows its base—the letter or symbol it modifies—and displays above it. It is reusable in technical notation, but the mark alone does not specify one universal operation; the surrounding formula gives it context.
Why does ⃔ move or disappear?
Its position depends on a preceding base and font support.
Enter the base first, then ⃔. If the mark comes first, it may attach to a previous character or appear without a base.
Font support and mark-positioning data affect where it appears; poor support can shift or hide it without changing the character sequence.

1Why does ⃔ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
