combining enclosing circle

Combining enclosing circle

Put this combining circle mark after the character it should enclose: <code>1⃝</code>. It is a formatting mark, so the base character and font shape the result. In early Church Slavonic numerals, an enclosing sign marked multiplication by 10,000; that historical reading belongs to numeral context.

What ⃝ means

The base character comes first; this mark follows it. In a Unicode-aware editor, insert U+20DD immediately after the character; 1 + ⃝ produces 1⃝.

In early Church Slavonic manuscripts, enclosing signs marked numeral letters as higher values. The ten-thousands sign multiplied the enclosed numeral’s value by 10,000. Unicode documentation unifies that historical use with this generic combining mark.

Why does my circled character look wrong?

Font support determines whether the circle sits correctly. As of 2026, Unicode says full rendering support for enclosing marks is not widely available, so the same sequence can look right in one font and misplaced or absent in another.

It encloses only the preceding grapheme cluster—the text unit that appears as one character, even if it uses several code points. A whole word needs markup or another higher-level layout method.

Technical mark: the surrounding character and context supply the reading.

A circle around a letter does not by itself mean ten thousand.

Can this mark circle a whole word?

No. Its scope is one preceding grapheme cluster—the text unit displayed as one character. A multi-letter enclosure needs markup or another higher-level layout method.
