Combining Suspension Mark

4/64

In Glagolitic writing, ᷃ marks a one-letter abbreviation: the marked letter stands for a whole word. It is related to the titlo, which more often signals a contraction across several letters. The dotted circle sometimes used to display the mark is a placeholder, not part of it.

Text symbol

What ᷃ means

It marks a Glagolitic letter that stands for a whole word.

Glagolitic is an early Slavic script. This Glagolitic suspension mark is described as a contextual form of the titlo, an abbreviation sign used in Glagolitic and Cyrillic writing. An early-15th-century Croatian manuscript shows a marked letter standing for a whole word; the stroke kept it from being mistaken for an ordinary letter, a preposition, or a numeral. Shortening recurring words saved writing space.

Why does it look like a breve?

It may resemble a breve; context gives it its meaning.

It attaches to a base letter and normally has no separate spacing. If a chart shows , the dotted circle marks the base's position; it is a display placeholder, not part of ᷃. A 2025 font comparison showed some Latin fonts rendering the mark like a breve or caron; the resemblance is visual, not a change of meaning.

An archival and editorial mark whose reading depends on the writing tradition around it.

A breve is a different mark; visual similarity does not make it an abbreviation sign.

Drift: A 2025 Unicode proposal reports Vietnamese Wikimedia editors using ᷃ as an editorial stand-in for the Middle Vietnamese apex and requests a Vietnamese annotation.

Combining suspension mark vs combining breve: the breve is a separate vowel mark. Some fonts make ᷃ resemble it, but it does not mark a Glagolitic abbreviation.

Questions people ask

Why does ᷃ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Combining Diacritical Marks Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
