What Ⲭ means
Ⲭ is the Coptic capital letter Khi, adapted from Greek chi. Writing Egyptian with Greek letters began after Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt, toward the end of the fourth century BCE; earlier Old Coptic experiments came before the standardized script.
Demotic, an older Egyptian script, supplied extra signs for sounds Greek lacked. Christian Egyptians used Coptic for scripture and other religious texts; private documents survive.

1Why does Ⲭ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
