What ⲗ means
It writes the “l” sound in Coptic.
Egyptian written with Greek letters appears on papyrus in the first and second centuries CE. A Coptic alphabet emerged by the third century CE, adding signs adapted from Egyptian writing. Regional forms recorded Egyptian speech and later carried Christian scripture. By the medieval period, Coptic was used chiefly for liturgy and scholarship.
As of 2026, some fonts lack Coptic support, so ⲗ may not display. Unicode 4.1 gave Coptic a separate block from related Greek letters.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ⲗ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Coptic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
