What ⲣ means

It is a Coptic letter for a sound written r in Latin transliteration.

Coptic is the late written form of Egyptian used by Christian communities. ⲣ appears within words such as ⲣⲱⲙⲉ (“person”) and ⲣⲣⲟ (“king”).

How did the Coptic alphabet begin?

It grew from writing Egyptian with Greek letters.

Greek letters were used for Egyptian soon after Alexander’s conquest in the late 4th century BCE. Egyptian glosses in Greek letters appear in magical and astrological papyri from the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, where letters could record an invocation’s pronunciation. Around the turn of the 3rd century CE, literary manuscripts were standardizing a Greek-based alphabet with extra signs adapted from Demotic, an older Egyptian script, for sounds Greek lacked.

Christian communities gave the alphabet its long documentary life. Bible translation became its first major use, followed by scripture, liturgy, monastic writing, letters, and other documents.

Why can ⲣ sound different in Coptic?

Dialect and reading tradition can change the spoken value.

Sahidic served as the classical literary dialect; by the 12th century, Bohairic had become the leading later liturgical and literary tradition. As of 2026, Bohairic remains the Coptic Church’s liturgical language. Modern liturgical readers may follow Greco-Bohairic or Old Bohairic pronunciation, so the same written letter may sound different.

Greek rho is the closest visual match, but use ⲣ in Coptic text and ρ in Greek text; a similar outline does not make the characters interchangeable.

ⲣ belongs in Coptic writing, especially scholarly or liturgical text; it is not casual shorthand for Latin r.

Don’t substitute Greek ρ just because it looks similar.
