What ⲥ means
ⲥ is the Coptic letter sima for the “s” sound.
Coptic is the final stage of Egyptian writing. Greek letters, linked with Christianity, supplemented Demotic, an older Egyptian script that no longer matched speech. First- and second-century CE papyri show Egyptian in Greek, sometimes with pronunciation notes; a fuller alphabet appears by the later third century CE. In the early Christian period, Coptic writing moved from temple and school use into scripture, literature, and worship.
