duployan letter ie

Duployan Letter Ie

𛱈 is a Duployan vowel sign that stays fixed instead of turning with nearby strokes, and can guide abbreviations written only with vowels. Émile Duployé published the system for fast French note-taking in 1860; Jean-Marie-Raphaël Le Jeune later adapted it for Chinook Jargon, a trade language, and Indigenous languages in interior British Columbia, in his Catholic mission newsletter Kamloops Wawa from 1891–1923.

What 𛱈 means

Pernin’s adaptation assigns this sign the value a. IE is the name used in the combined Duployan inventory; shorthand systems may assign related forms different sound values.

Why does it look different in a word?

Its neighbors affect how the strokes join. Most Duployan letters attach to adjacent letters, so this vowel’s outline can differ from the isolated glyph.

Why does 𛱈 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
