71/143

𛱆 is a vowel letter in Duployan, a shorthand system first developed for fast, speech-based writing in French. It joins neighboring strokes and turns toward the preceding consonant. Its sound depends on the adaptation: in Perrault's English shorthand, it can represent long a or short e with accents.

What 𛱆 means

It is a vowel letter in the Duployan shorthand family.

Émile Duployé's French shorthand, published in 1860, is the documented starting point for modern Duployan. Later adaptations served English, German, Spanish and Romanian, as well as Le Jeune's writing for Chinook Jargon and several First Nations languages in interior British Columbia. The Kamloops Wawa published a long run of Chinook writing from 1891–1923.

The letter name I does not promise one sound in every adaptation. In Perrault's English shorthand, this letter can represent long a or short e with accents.

Why does 𛱆 change shape?

It turns so its strokes can join the preceding consonant.

Duployan vowels join neighboring letters. For 𛱆, the preceding consonant sets the direction of the join, so the connected form can look different from the letter on its own. This is a primary-orienting vowel: its preferred orientation is toward the right and upward.

The documented AI and IA sequences form compound vowels, so the order of the letters matters.

How do I type Duployan I?

Use a Duployan keyboard layout suited to the spelling system.

A general Duployan keyboard layout exists, but language-specific layouts can provide different sets of letters. For a document, use a keyboard layout and font that support the Duployan spelling tradition you are writing.

Specialist and archival: it belongs in Duployan writing, script study or historical texts.

The name I does not fix its sound; the Duployan adaptation determines its value.
