What 𛱅 means
It marks the Aou circle vowel in Duployan.
A circle vowel forms a loop; adjacent strokes meet its edge.
How did Duployan move beyond French shorthand?
It grew from earlier French shorthand and later became a writing system.
French shorthand already included Conen de Prépéan’s method, adapted by Aimé Paris. Duployé and his brother simplified it; their method appeared in 1860 for faster note-taking and literacy.
Missionary Jean-Marie-Raphaël Le Jeune adapted it for Chinook Jargon, a trade language, and Indigenous languages of interior British Columbia. The Kamloops Wawa newsletter, mostly in Chinook Jargon, used the script from 1891–1923, making it a primary writing system and preserving a long record.
