What 𛱀 means
Its value depends on the shorthand system. Perrault and Pernin are English adaptations; Sloan-Duployéan is another.
Why did Duployan reach other languages?
It spread through teaching and language adaptations. Émile Duployé simplified French shorthand based on Conen de Prépéan’s system, revised by Aimé Paris. Published in 1860, it aimed to make quick writing and reading easier to learn. In 1890, missionary Jean-Marie-Raphaël Le Jeune adapted it for Indigenous languages in interior British Columbia. Kamloops Wawa, a newsletter in the regional trade language Chinook Jargon, ran 1891–1923 and preserves an extensive record.
