What 𛱜 means
No; its reading depends on the writing system. Chinuk pipa assigns it “wa.” Perrault’s English adaptation of Duployan gives it the value “oy.” Read it according to the system, not its name alone.
How did French shorthand become Chinuk pipa?
It began as a French speed-writing system, then was adapted for local languages. Émile and Aldoric Duployé published an early method in 1860; their distinct system followed in 1867. In 1890, Catholic missionary Jean-Marie-Raphaël Le Jeune adapted it for Chinook Wawa and other Indigenous languages. The Kamloops Wawa newsletter ran from 1891–1923.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𛱜 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Duployan block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
