What 𛱠 means
It is a compound W-vowel sign. Duployan words join as cursive outlines, and this sign supplies a vowel element. Salishan is a family of Indigenous languages in the Pacific Northwest.
How did Duployan reach British Columbia?
Through Chinuk Pipa, a local adaptation. Émile Duployé learned a version of Conen de Prépéan’s shorthand, as modified by Aimé Paris; with his brother, he revised and published it in 1860, aiming to make it easier to learn. In 1891, Catholic missionary Jean-Marie-Raphaël Le Jeune adapted Duployan for Chinook Jargon, a regional trade language; the resulting Chinuk Pipa appeared in the Kamloops Wawa through 1923. The adaptation made shorthand a primary script for some Indigenous languages.
