What ፻ means
፻ is the sign for one hundred. A numeral before it counts hundreds; smaller signs after it add the remainder.
A 2014 study places Ḥǝnzat Stela 1, an inscribed stone, probably in the third century. A 2023 essay calls it the earliest likely evidence for Ethiopic numeral signs and notes older inscriptions wrote numbers as words. The numerals may trace to Greek letters used as numbers, perhaps via Coptic, an Egyptian language; the origin is disputed.

1Why does ፻ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
