What ፷ means
It is a numeral sign for 60, not a syllable.
A 2010 history places Anza's royal loaf inscription in the late third century CE. A 2023 study calls the numerals on Ḥǝnzat Stela 1, a third-century CE carved stone monument, the oldest known sign-based Ethiopic numerals; earlier inscriptions wrote numbers as words. The study reads their quantities as payments, ounces, or days.
Origins are disputed: one account traces the signs to Greek, perhaps through Coptic, an Egyptian writing tradition; a 2023 study argues for local Geʽez-language origins. An Amharic (Ethiopian-language) New Testament used them for pages, chapters, and verses in 1852.
