What ፧ means
It closes a question, like ?. Early Ethiopian inscriptions used a vertical bar to divide words. Later, Geʽez—a classical language written in this script—developed native marks for sentences and paragraphs.
Inside Ethiopic quotation marks, ፧ stays before the closing quote and takes the place of the word-space mark.
It signals legacy reproduction; the question remains literal.
For fresh text, use ?; reserve ፧ for legacy material.

1Why does ፧ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
