In classical Ethiopic punctuation, an older writing convention, ፨ could stand where the final full stop ። would go, or follow the placement rules of ፠, the section mark.

In early Ethiopian inscriptions, vertical bars separated words; later, a colon-like mark took over that word-separating role. As of 2026, ፨ has largely fallen out of modern use; modern writing has also adopted some Western punctuation. Two-color calligraphic styling changes its appearance, not its punctuation role.
