What ቤ means

Choose the fifth form in an Ethiopic keyboard's b-series.

An Amharic fidel keyboard enters it through a layout-specific sequence. In GFF Amharic Keyman 3.3, pressing b then a produces ቤ; other Ethiopic layouts may assign different keys because the sequence belongs to the keyboard layout.

Transliteration—the Latin-letter representation of a character—varies by guide: an Amharic writing guide uses “be,” while a Modern Ge'ez keyboard manual uses “bie.”

How did the Ethiopic script develop?

It grew from a consonant script into a vowel-marked syllable system.

The Ethiopic script developed from an ancient South Arabian consonant script, though scholars debate the exact route. In Ethiopia and Eritrea, inscriptions in a South Arabian-style script, called Pseudo-Sabaean, date to the 8th/7th centuries BCE. An Ethiopian consonant alphabet (an abjad, a writing system that mainly records consonants) for Ge'ez appears in the 1st–3rd centuries CE; by the 4th century, vowel markings had reshaped its consonant forms into syllable signs. ቤ belongs to the b-series in that system.

The shift helped accommodate a growing Ge'ez literary corpus, especially sacred texts.

Where is the Ethiopic script used?

It serves Ge'ez, Amharic, Tigrinya, and other languages.

As of 2026, Ge'ez is used chiefly in liturgy after it ceased to be an everyday spoken language. Amharic adopted the script for wider public use in the 13th or 14th century; it later became important in schooling and government writing.

In Amharic, ቤት means “house”: ቤ is its opening syllable, and the following ት completes the written word.

As written text, ቤ is neutral; the surrounding word and language set its meaning.

A standalone ቤ gives only a syllable; read it in its word before translating.
