What ፋ means
It is one syllable, not a word.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
It evolved from older South Arabian writing.
South Arabian inscriptions around 500 BCE served funerary, religious and administrative purposes. Geʿez-linked monuments at Yeha and Matara date to the fourth to fifth century BCE; Ethiopic inscriptions appear in the second/third centuries CE. The route from South Arabia remains debated as of 2026. Around 350 CE, Geʿez, an ancient Ethiopian language, gained vowel forms that turned consonant signs into syllables for sacred texts. As of 2026, Geʿez is chiefly used in worship; Ethiopic also writes Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and Oromo.

Questions people ask
1Why does ፋ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
