What 𞟮 means
The GFF Gurage keyboard manual version 1.0.1 maps muie to 𞟮.
What does 𞟮 write?
It writes the Gurage syllable mwee. In the Ethiopic script, most signs combine a consonant and a vowel. Here, the M-series consonant is pronounced with rounded lips before e, forming one syllable.
Sahle Selassie and linguist Wolf Leslau began developing extra Ethiopic forms in 1962 while preparing Gurage village stories. The Chaha text appeared in the 1966 collection Ethiopians Speak: Studies in Cultural Background; its added rounded M form represented a Gurage sound the shared inventory lacked.
The revised Gurage spelling was endorsed regionally in 2019 and introduced in public schools in 2020. Unicode, the standard computers use to store text, encoded the modern form separately in 2021. Older spelling may use ᎂ for the corresponding syllable.
