What 𞟱 means
It writes the qwee syllable in modern Gurage.
Gurage uses an Ethiopic syllabary: each sign pairs a consonant with its vowel. This one writes q with w-like lip-rounding in a single syllable.
An early Chaha Gurage orthography appeared in print in 1966. A 2013 revision simplified forms to ease reading and learning; 𞟱 replaced older ቌ for this syllable. The Gurage Zone council endorsed the revision in 2019, and schools introduced it in September 2020. Ethiopic writing developed from South Arabian script.
