What ⷙ means
No; modern spelling uses ጙ.
Older Unicode materials label this family “Sebatbeit.” Preserve ⷙ when a source uses that spelling.
How did ⷙ enter Gurage writing?
Ethiopic script links by a debated route to South Arabian writing. South Arabian inscriptions date to the 8th/7th centuries BCE; recognizable Ethiopic appears by the 2nd/3rd centuries CE, with vowel-marked syllables by the 4th century. The script first served Ge’ez, then Amharic, Tigrinya, and Gurage.
Sahle Selassie Berhane Mariam and Wolf Leslau created ⷙ among 44 Ethiopic-derived signs for Chaha Gurage in 1966. The 1977 spelling used it too; a 2013 revision mapped it to ጙ.
