What ኻ means
It writes a syllable; its reading depends on language. Kxaa is a label, not a pronunciation. Tigrinya romanization gives xā: x marks a rough sound at the back of the mouth, and ā a long ah. Amharic reads it as ha, starting with a light breath.
Ethiopic writing grew from South-Arabian consonant writing, which recorded consonants but not vowels, attested around the eighth to seventh century BCE. Proto-Geʽez, an early form of an Ethiopian language, is evidenced around the fourth to fifth century BCE. Around 350 CE, Ethiopic became an abugida: vowel marks joined consonant signs to form syllables.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ኻ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
