Ethiopic Syllable Kxi

On the GFF Amharic keyboard, type Ki.

What does ኺ mean?

It is an Ethiopic syllable whose reading depends on the language.

A 2011 Tigrinya romanization table writes it in Latin letters as xi; BGN-style Amharic transliteration writes it as ẖī. These are transcription conventions, not word meanings or guides to pronouncing the Latin letters by your own language’s rules. The Amharic, Awngi, Hamt’agna, and Tigrinya languages use this KX series.

The Ethiopic script has older roots: the earliest writing evidence in Ethiopia and Eritrea is pseudo-Sabaean, a consonant script without vowel marks, from the eighth–seventh centuries BCE. A later Ethiopian abjad, a consonant-writing script, was used for Ge’ez; around the fourth century CE, vowel marking turned it into an abugida, where each sign represents a consonant-and-vowel syllable. The script later served Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages; these dates describe the script, not the exact history of ኺ.
