What ኽ means
Its sound depends on the language of the word. Amharic-oriented material uses the Latin-letter guide hɨ; other transliteration conventions show xɨ or x. These are ways to represent Ethiopic writing with Latin letters, not interchangeable readings; the surrounding language tells you which applies.
The wider Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE. By the fourth century, it was a vocalized abugida: each sign combines a consonant with a vowel. The syllable signs are often called fidel. Its relationship to South Arabian writing is debated: some accounts describe an adaptation, while others stress a distinct Ethiopian branch that developed in contact with it.
The script first served Geʽez, a language still used in liturgy. Amharic adopted it in the 13th or 14th century and, by the early 20th century, became the language of elementary schooling and Ethiopia's national language. ኽ remains a letter used within a word.
Someone sent me ኽ
Alone, ኽ is a fragment, not a complete word. It cannot show whether the sender meant Amharic, Tigrinya, Geʽez, or an Agew language such as Awngi. Ask for the surrounding word and its language.
In a word it is ordinary spelling; alone, it looks like a fragment or script sample.
A lone ኽ does not identify a language or message.
