What ኾ means
As of 2026, Sparkpond’s Amharic Keyboard maps x then o to ኾ. Choose an Amharic fidel layout, meaning a keyboard for the Ethiopic script; the sequence depends on the layout.
GFF Amharic Keyman version 1.9.1 maps uppercase K to ኾ. Its shortcut is layout-specific.
What does ኾ mean?
It is the o-vowel form in the Ethiopic KX series.
Ethiopic writing combines a consonant and a vowel in one syllabic sign; KX labels this consonant series, and the o vowel is built into ኾ. In Amharic, ኾ appears in መኾን, meaning “to be.”
Latin-letter spellings vary: one is xo; the BGN-based Amharic transliteration writes ẖo, with a line under the h. If ኾ appears as an empty box, your font lacks the glyph; the character itself has not changed.
Where did the Ethiopic script come from?
It grew from an older consonant script into vowel-marked syllables.
The recognizable ancestor of the Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from northern Ethiopia in the first millennium BCE, when South Arabian consonant writing was in use. That script recorded consonants without marking the vowels in each sign. The system changed gradually; around the fourth century CE, vowel notation reshaped it into the Ethiopic syllable system.
In the later manuscript tradition, the script served Geʽez, an Ethiopian language, in liturgical books, prayers, and healing scrolls. It was later adapted for Amharic and other Ethiopian languages, so the reading of ኾ depends on the language being written.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
