ethiopic syllable maa

Ethiopic syllable Ma

On the Geʽez Frontier Foundation (GFF) Modern Geʽez keyboard, the keys <code>ma</code> produce ማ; other layouts can differ. It represents the spoken syllable “ma” (m followed by a) and usually sits inside a word. The leading account traces Ethiopic script to Old South Arabian writing; it later served Geʽez and now writes Amharic, Tigrinya, and other languages.

What ማ means

On the GFF keyboard, enter ma for ማ.

The GFF Modern Geʽez keyboard uses QWERTY keys to enter Ethiopic text by sound; its table maps ma to ማ. Other Ethiopic layouts may use different keystrokes.

If ማ appears as a square, your font or text renderer may lack Ethiopic coverage; the stored character can still be correct.

What does ማ mean?

It represents the syllable ma: an m sound followed by a.

Ethiopic writing combines consonant and vowel in one sign, so ማ is a word-building unit, not a complete translation. Its reading in an actual word depends on the language and surrounding text.

The first Ethiopian attestations are placed in the 4th century CE. The leading account links the script to Old South Arabian writing, which reached the Horn of Africa near the end of the first millennium BCE; some scholars argue that Ethiopic script developed independently. Its gradual change from a consonant-only script to a left-to-right system that also marks vowels let one sign represent a syllable.

Why was Ethiopic writing developed?

It was adapted to write Geʽez and later extended to other languages.

Geʽez is an older Semitic language whose written use continues in liturgy. As of 2026-09-06, manuscript collections include prayer books, books of Psalms, and saints’ lives.

Ethiopic writing also serves modern Amharic, Tigrinya, and other languages. Shared signs can represent different sounds across them, so ማ points to a written syllable but not, by itself, one language or a full word.

On its own, ማ reads as a fragment of Ethiopic writing; the surrounding word and language supply its meaning and tone.

By itself, ማ is a syllable, not a full word; read it with the surrounding text.
