ethiopic syllable pi

Ethiopic Syllable Pi

318/358

ፒ is the Ethiopic pi syllable, combining the p sound with the i sound, as at the start of “piano.” In Amharic, Tigrinya, Ge’ez, Tigre and other languages written in this script, it supplies one syllable within a word. The script’s syllables developed as vowel forms were added to an older consonant writing system.

What ፒ means

It represents the pi syllable in Ethiopic writing. Its p consonant and i vowel are joined in one character; surrounding letters and language rules shape the full reading. On its own, ፒ is a syllable, not a complete word or translation. In the Ethiopic p-series, the forms share a consonant and vary by vowel.

A Sabaean alphabet—a South Arabian writing system that recorded consonants—reached the Horn of Africa around the 8th century BCE. Dakhanamo is reported as the earliest attestation of the Ethiopian alphabet. The exact route remains debated.

Inscriptions from the 2nd–3rd century CE show a clearly defined Ethiopic script. By the 4th century CE, vowel notation had reshaped consonant signs into syllable forms. The writing system grew by adapting older signs; ፒ is one of its vowel-marked forms.

Why does ፒ change with language?

Its syllabic role stays; the language shapes its pronunciation. The same Ethiopic script writes Ge’ez, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and other languages used in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Languages can keep, add or drop forms to suit their writing needs.

As of 2026, Ge’ez is used mainly in religious services, while the script also serves modern languages in everyday writing. Depending on community and setting, it can evoke religious learning, ordinary writing, or debates about language and identity; in some settings, language choice is politically charged.

How do I type ፒ?

On a phonetic Ethiopic layout, type p then i. Unicode assigns the character but does not set the keystrokes. The Modern Ge’ez keyboard manual checked in 2026 maps p then i to ፒ; another layout may use a different route.

Fonts draw ፒ with different outlines, so a changed silhouette alone does not mean a different character.

Why does ፒ look different in another font?

It can. Different fonts draw the glyph differently. If the font lacks Ethiopic support, it may show a missing-glyph box even when the text still contains ፒ.
