What ጲ means
It is the i-form of one marked-p Ethiopic consonant row.
In Latin scholarly notation, p̣i uses a dot below p to distinguish this consonant row; the dot is not part of ጲ. An Amharic mapping writes the cell P'i, while a 1997 Tigrinya romanization table writes pi. These are language-specific spellings, so the surrounding word and language settle its reading.
How did the Ethiopic syllabary develop?
It developed from an older consonant alphabet linked to Old South Arabian.
An older consonant alphabet wrote consonants without giving each vowel its own form. The Ethiopic system gives consonants different shapes for vowel combinations. Its exact route of adaptation from Old South Arabian writing is debated.
Historical accounts place the development of Ge'ez script around the 1st–3rd centuries CE. Fourth-century Aksumite inscriptions show the syllabic system alongside an older consonant style. The script first served Ge'ez, a classical language of the region, then was adapted for Amharic, Tigre, and Tigrinya.
How do I type ጲ?
On a phonetic Ethiopic layout, choose Pi.
The exact key name depends on the layout: on one phonetic Modern Ge'ez keyboard, Pi produces ጲ and bare P produces ጵ. If a key gives the other p-row form, check which layout is active.
Alone, ጲ is a syllable sample; in running text, its reading comes from the word and language around it.
“Phi” is a naming label here; it does not make ጲ the Greek letter φ.
