What ቓ means

It is the “a” form in one consonant family. The Ethiopic alphabet, also called fidel, changes a sign’s form to mark different vowels; each form belongs inside a word.

The Ethiopic script developed from South Arabian consonant writing. Pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions—texts in an early South Arabian script—in Ethiopia and Eritrea date to the 8th/7th centuries BC. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in the 2nd–3rd centuries CE and gains vowel notation by the 4th century CE. It writes Geʽez, a liturgical language, and languages such as Amharic and Tigrinya.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ቓ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
