ethiopic syllable qhwaa

Ethiopic Syllable Qhwaa

87/358

ቛ is a written syllable used in Tigrinya words; by itself, it is not a word with its own meaning. It belongs to the Ethiopic fidel, a syllabary, and its Latin-style Unicode name is not an English pronunciation guide. A Tigrinya phonetic keyboard may enter it with Qua.

What ቛ means

It writes a syllable; the surrounding word supplies its meaning.

Fidel is the name for the Ethiopic syllabary, where each sign represents a consonant-vowel syllable. A Tigrinya chart groups ቛ in the QH series; that Latin-style label identifies a writing-system family, not an English sound-out. The 2024 Ethiopic language repertoire lists it under Tigrigna, another name used for Tigrinya. Ethiopic writing serves several languages.

Where does the Ethiopic script come from?

It has local roots and historical links to Arabian scripts.

The region's earliest Sabaic inscriptions are placed around the eighth or seventh century BCE. Local Ge'ez/Ethiopic inscriptions are attested by the second or third century CE, with vowel notation by the fourth century at latest. The script first served Ge'ez and later wrote languages including Amharic, Tigre and Oromo. Ethiopic writing runs from left to right and marks vowels by changing the consonant sign. Its history is connected to North and South Arabian writing traditions.

How do I type ቛ?

Use a Tigrinya layout; the key depends on the layout.

On Keyman's GFF Tigrinya phonetic keyboard, type Qua for ቛ. Other layouts may map the same syllable differently. The keyboard mapping determines which keys produce the character; it does not change the character the layout outputs.

Different Ethiopic fonts can draw different outlines for the same syllable. A changed outline alone does not mean the text contains a different character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ቛ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
