ethiopic syllable qhe

Ethiopic Syllable Qhe

83/358

ቕ is an Ethiopic syllable sign; in Tigrinya it helps spell a word rather than making a complete message by itself. The fidel system writes a consonant and its vowel together in one sign, within a script tradition shaped by older South Arabian writing.

What ቕ means

It is a syllable sign used to spell words. Each Ethiopic fidel sign writes a consonant with a vowel, and ቕ belongs to the QH series. “QHE” is the Unicode character label, not a word to translate. In Tigrinya, ቕ appears at the end of ጽቡቕ, meaning “good” or “fine”; alone, it does not tell you which word or language was intended.

Early writing in Ethiopia and Eritrea includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions—writing in an older South Arabian style—from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the 2nd/3rd centuries CE, and its vowel-marked abugida form develops by the fourth century. An abugida writes consonant-and-vowel syllables with related signs. These dates describe the script's development, not the first appearance of ቕ's exact modern outline.

Ethiopic has a historical relationship with South Arabian consonant writing, an older script tradition from southern Arabia that wrote consonants. The script was adapted for the Ge'ez language, then reshaped so each sign could represent a consonant-and-vowel syllable. Scholarship links this change to the growth of Ge'ez literature, especially sacred texts. Ge'ez later shifted from royal and literary use toward mainly use in religious worship, while Amharic and Tigrinya adopted the script for their own writing.

How do I type ቕ?

Use an Ethiopic keyboard for the language you're typing. In the Keyman GFF Tigrinya manual (version 2.0.1), uppercase Q enters ቕ; its example SbuQ produces ጽቡቕ. Those keystrokes belong to that layout. Unicode does not set keyboard shortcuts, so another layout may use different keys.

Two fonts can draw the same encoded Ethiopic syllable with different outlines. The script arranges syllable signs by consonant and vowel, and fonts may use variant shapes for one encoded character. Check the word's spelling in context before assuming an outline change altered the word.

This is an Ethiopic spelling sign whose reading depends on language and word context.

Alone, ቕ does not tell you which word or language was intended.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ቕ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
