What ⷆ means
It writes the o-vowel member of Gurage’s palatalized-q series.
“Palatalized” means the consonant is made with the tongue raised toward the palate; q labels this sound series. Its earliest documented print use is a 1966 spelling system for Chaha, a Gurage language. The system added Ethiopic signs for sounds missing from the established inventory. Ethiopic writing developed from South Arabian script and gained vowel notation around the fourth century CE.
In 2013, a Gurage revision moved the series into the ቐ family. ⷆ stayed as its legacy o-form; modern spelling uses ቖ.
