ethiopic syllable qye

Ethiopic syllable Qye

57/79

ⷅ is a syllable sign from an older Gurage spelling system. In Chaha charts it marks a palatalized syllable: the tongue rises toward the roof of the mouth as the consonant is spoken. A modern Gurage table writes the corresponding slot as ቕ; alone, ⷅ gives too little context to translate.

What ⷅ means

It writes one syllable in an older Gurage spelling series.

Qye is a transliteration label, not an English definition. In the Chaha chart, ⷅ is the sixth, ɨ-marked form in a series built from ቀ. Here ɨ denotes a central vowel, made with the tongue near the middle of the mouth. The series marks palatalized consonants, pronounced with the tongue raised toward the roof of the mouth.

Inside a Gurage word, it contributes that syllable. Alone, it gives too little context for translation.

Why does ⷅ differ from ቕ?

It belongs to an older spelling convention.

The earliest documented printed appearance is in a 1966 Chaha volume. Orthographic tables from 1977 and 1998 retain the palatalized series, which marked Gurage sound distinctions that the regular Ethiopic syllable set did not show.

A 2013 Gurage table writes the corresponding sixth-vowel slot as ቕ. A 2021 Unicode proposal maps ⷅ to ቕ and describes the Ethiopic Extended palatalized series as part of an older convention.

Sebatbeit reflects an early publishing and standardization context, not exclusive ownership. The same extended letters serve related Gurage varieties; orthographic proposals also use Gurage as a broader umbrella.

Specialist Gurage spelling; its reading depends on the word around it.

Do not replace it with ቕ unless you know which spelling convention the text follows.

Why does ⷅ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic Extended block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
