What ሤ means
It is the e-vowel form of ሠ.
Fidel is the Ethiopic script used in Amharic. In this row, the s sound stays while the vowel changes.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
It grew from older consonant writing.
Early Geʿez writing (Proto-Geʿez) appears in stone inscriptions at Yeha and Matara dated to the fourth to fifth century BCE. It is linked to South Arabian writing, which recorded consonants without vowels. Distinct Ethiopic forms appear by the second/third centuries CE. By the fourth century, added vowel marks made syllable writing and helped produce books in Geʿez, the region’s classical church language. The script later adapted for Amharic and Tigrinya.
