What ሢ means
It marks the spoken syllable “si.”
Ethiopic signs pair a consonant with a vowel; ሢ is the “i” form in the ሠ series.
The earliest surviving inscriptions in Ethiopia and Eritrea, from the 8th/7th centuries BCE, use South Arabian writing, which recorded consonants only. Recognizable Ethiopic inscriptions appear in the 2nd–3rd centuries CE; vowel forms were established by the 4th century CE. First used for Geʽez, an older Ethiopian language, Ethiopic was later adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
