What ሪ means
ሪ is the Ethiopic syllable ri: r consonant plus i vowel.
Fidel is the Ethiopic writing system: its signs represent syllables, not whole words. Inside a word, ሪ contributes one syllable; the rest of the word supplies its meaning.
How do I type ሪ?
Choose an Ethiopic keyboard or input method.
On SIL Power-G Ethiopic Keyboard version 1.2.1, press r, then i to form ሪ; that sequence belongs to this layout. Other Ethiopic layouts may use different keys.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
It grew through contact and gained vowel signs.
Ethiopic writing developed through Red Sea contact with ancient South Arabian writing. Early inscriptions in northern Ethiopia combine South Arabian and local features; clearly defined Ethiopic writing appears in the second or third centuries CE.
In the fourth century, vowel notation reshaped older consonant writing into a syllabary, letting signs represent syllables such as ሪ. Aksumite stone monuments—including stelae, upright inscribed stones, and obelisks—recorded royal deeds and professed faith.
Ge'ez later ceased to be an everyday spoken language but remained in liturgy. Ethiopic writing was also adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages.
Neutral as a writing sign; it carries syllable information, not a built-in mood.
A lone ሪ cannot identify a whole word; ask for the surrounding text.

1Why does ሪ look different in another font?
It can. Ethiopic typefaces vary in proportions and details; a different drawing does not by itself mean a different character.
