What does ሡ mean?
The sound of ሡ is roughly “soo.”
In pre-Aksumite Ethiopia, inscriptions recorded local languages in everyday use as well as in public and royal writing. South Arabian settlers and stonecutters brought their language and alphabet to the Horn around the eighth century BCE; the local Ethiopic script developed gradually from that writing tradition. As of 2026-09-06, the earliest reported Ethiopic alphabet inscription is at Dakhanamo. By the fourth century CE, vowel notation had reshaped the older consonant alphabet into a system where each sign combines a consonant and a vowel.
Why do ሡ and ሱ have different spellings?
They belong to different spelling series.
In Geʽez, the classical Ethiopic language, the series are distinct; modern Amharic can pronounce both as “su.” Use the established spelling of the word.
