What ዧ means
It is the zhwa syllable in Ethiopic writing. An Amharic chart romanizes it as «zhwa»: the «zh» sound in English «measure», followed by «wa».
The earliest inscriptions from Ethiopia and Eritrea include pseudo-Sabaean, a South Arabian consonant script, from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in the second/third centuries CE; by the fourth century it had developed vowel-marked syllable forms. Those dates describe the writing system, not this exact character.
The script first wrote Ge’ez, whose manuscripts became central to church and literary culture, then gained forms for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages. Within the Ethiopic script, ዧ belongs to the ዠ (zh) family as its wa form. A 2024 Ethiopic reference list labels ዧ for Amharic.
How do I type ዧ?
One phonetic Amharic keyboard maps Zwa to ዧ. This is text: its visible shape comes from your Ethiopic font, so typefaces can draw it differently.
In that layout, Z selects the zh family and wa selects this syllable form. Other Ethiopic keyboard layouts may use different sequences.
As of 2026-09-06, ዧ has no established standalone chat-reaction meaning.
If it arrives alone, ask for language or keyboard context before reading a mood into it.

1Why does ዧ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
