What ዣ means
Choose the zha family, then its aa-order key.
To type ዣ with an Amharic keyboard, press ShiftZ, then a in the GFF Keyman layout. That layout takes the consonant family followed by its vowel order; other Ethiopic keyboards may use different keys because Unicode does not set keyboard shortcuts.
What does ዣ mean in a word?
It is the aa-order syllable in the Ethiopic zha series.
Ethiopic writing arranges consonant-vowel syllables in a grid; ዣ is a complete syllabic character in the zha row. The Unicode name “zhaa” distinguishes this cell; its doubled a is not a pronunciation guide. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names’ system for writing Amharic in Latin letters uses zha for this cell. Read its sound from the language and word, not from the Unicode label.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
It developed from South Arabian writing adapted locally.
South Arabian writing, a script from southern Arabia, reached Tigray in northern Ethiopia around the eighth century BCE. An inscription from Dakhanamo is cited as evidence of the Ethiopic alphabet. The script changed gradually as it was adapted to write Ge’ez, a language used chiefly in liturgy.
By the fourth century CE, Ge’ez writing ran left to right and had vowel notation. Its signs represented consonant-vowel syllables, making it a syllabary. The script also writes Amharic, Tigre, Oromo, and other languages.

1Why does ዣ look different in another font?
That is normal. Fonts may draw the same encoded syllable with different outlines. The text character remains ዣ; judge its identity by the encoded character, not one font’s shape.
