garay combining dot above

Garay combining dot above

41/69

In Garay, 𐵫 is a combining dot that changes the sound of the letter before it; by itself, it is not a complete letter. Garay was devised by Assane Faye for Wolof in Senegal and first appeared in print in January 1961. With Garay small GA, it spells the nasal sound ŋ, like the “ng” at the end of English “sing.”

Text symbol

What 𐵫 means

It changes the sound of the Garay letter it follows. It is a spelling mark, not punctuation or decoration. On Garay small GA 𐵹, it forms 𐵹𐵫, which represents ŋ, a nasal sound formed at the back of the mouth.

Garay is a modern script Assane Faye created in Senegal for Wolof; it appeared in publications in January 1961. Faye drew on Arabic and Latin forms to represent African-language sounds. In Senegal, Wolof is officially written with Latin letters; Wolofal is an Arabic-based way to write Wolof. Faye’s Garay materials include textbooks, folktales, maps and a Qur’an with Wolof written between its lines. Garay has also been taught for Mandinka literacy and later gained fonts and digital teaching materials.

Why does 𐵫 look misplaced?

A font anchors it to the Garay letter before it. Enter the base first in text order; both characters display as one written unit. A dotted circle in a chart is a placeholder that lets the mark be seen without its base.

A Garay font prototype could misplace the mark above uppercase letters; that issue was recorded on 27 April, 2026. Garay is written right to left, so mixed-script paragraphs may need a right-to-left base direction.

Technical and spelling-specific: in Garay, this mark modifies a base letter.

Without a base letter, it has no complete Garay reading.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𐵫 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
