What means
It is Garay’s lowercase letter for the “s” sound. In a Garay word, it contributes that consonant; vowel signs and other letters complete the spelling.
Garay is a right-to-left script developed in Senegal by teacher Assane Faye for Wolof. He first published it in January 1961. Its direction and some design choices were meant to feel familiar to people who knew Arabic script, while offering a simpler alphabet that could also serve other African languages.
Faye’s materials included textbooks, folktales, maps, and a translation of the Qur’an, Islam’s holy book. Garay later reached informal teaching, women’s groups, and adult literacy work for Mandinka as well as Wolof. The letter’s sound stayed the same as the script’s role in local literacy broadened.
Why can Garay text display out of order?
Right-to-left direction and font support explain most display surprises. Garay runs from right to left, while Latin words and numbers keep their own left-to-right order. In mixed text, the wrong base direction can make the runs appear in an unexpected order.
Garay letters do not connect to one another. A handwritten flourish at the end of a word is decoration, not another encoded letter. A font needs Garay coverage; otherwise the letter may appear as a box. As of 2026, an orthography resource still describes its Garay font as an early prototype, where combining marks may not be placed perfectly.
What does it mean if someone sends alone?
It is usually a Garay letter sample or part of a spelling. On its own, it gives you the s consonant, not a complete word. A sender may also be checking whether their font or input method supports Garay.
Specialist and literacy-oriented: its presence signals Garay writing or a script sample.
Without the surrounding spelling, this consonant cannot identify a word.
Drift: Garay's path widened from handwritten and face-to-face teaching to Unicode text and prototype font resources; as of 2026, its user community remains small.

3Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
