Garay Small Letter Ta

59/69

Garay ta 𐵽 represents the t consonant, like the first sound in “top”; alone, it does not spell a word. Garay was designed in Senegal for writing Wolof and later supported literacy work. A font note updated 27 April 2026 warns that an early prototype could misplace vowel marks.

Text symbol

What 𐵽 means

It represents the consonant sound at the start of “top.”

The Garay t is a consonant letter, so it contributes a sound rather than a word meaning. Garay writes consonants and vowels with separate characters. Its text runs right to left, without cursive joining.

Why was Garay made?

Garay was designed to write Wolof in a locally created script.

Assane Faye created Garay in Senegal; it appeared in publications in January 1961. In the independence-era setting, Senegalese poet and president Léopold Sédar Senghor made a radio appeal for a durable writing system, and Faye set out to create one.

Garay drew on Arabic and Latin influences while aiming to represent African-language sounds without reshaping them to fit another script. It coexists with Wolof’s Latin spelling and Wolofal, an Ajami tradition that adapts Arabic writing for African languages. Later accounts describe textbooks, folktales, maps, a Qur’an translation, lessons, fonts, and online teaching associated with Garay. As of 2026, reports describe a small user community, including women’s groups and adult-literacy work.

Why can 𐵽 display or input badly?

A missing font hides the letter; unsupported input makes it hard to enter.

In 2019, a report said standard Garay keyboards and input apps were still being developed. If your system offers Unicode hexadecimal input, enter 10D7D; the exact keystrokes depend on the system. Latin t has the same consonant sound but is a different character.

A font note updated 27 April 2026 describes an early prototype Garay font and warns that vowel marks may be misplaced. That can make a syllable look wrong even when its base letter is correct.

A language and script choice: sent alone, 𐵽 reads as a letter sample, not a personal reaction.

Why does 𐵽 show as a box?

A font without Garay coverage can display an empty box instead. A Garay-capable font can draw the letter; the box is only a fallback.
