What means
It represents the initial consonant in “yes.”
Assane Faye created Garay in Senegal to write Wolof; it first appeared in print in January 1961. He gave it simpler forms for readers familiar with Arabic script. As of 2026, Latin is Senegal’s official script for Wolof; Wolofal, an Arabic-based way to write Wolof, is also used. Garay is also used by women’s groups and in adult literacy efforts for Wolof and Mandinka.
Garay text runs right to left, but its letters do not join. Latin text and numbers inside it keep left-to-right order, so a wrong paragraph direction can scramble how mixed text displays.

1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
