What ℷ means
It denotes the gimel function. Set theory uses it with infinite cardinals (sizes of infinite sets), among four Hebrew-derived signs written left to right.
In Hebrew numbering, ג means three. One Jewish mystical teaching pictures it as a wealthy giver hurrying to help the poor; that story belongs to the letter.
The oldest known alphabetic inscriptions at Wadi el-Hol in Egypt date to 1900–1800 BC. Tablets from Ugarit in Syria show aleph–bet–gimel, the first three letter names, in order by at least 1400 BC; these dates trace the letter tradition, not ℷ.
